The FCC’s 12 Days of Christmas

From Free Press Action Network, December 7, 2007
By Josh Stearns

At a time when the din of rehashed holiday music pipes through every loudspeaker in every shopping mall and public square, there are some carolers in Chicago who are giving new life to these tired tunes.

For example:

“Oh Sam Zell” (set to the tune “Jingle Bells”):

Stockholders want a change
The Tribune’s Up For Sale
A Deal We’ll Arrange
The Check Is In The Mail
Bribe the FCC
Get Our Waivers Through
Who Cares If Laws Deny Our Plea?
The Public Has No Clue!

Chicago Media Action is holding a singalong outside of the Tribune Tower on Michigan Avenue starting at 5pm on Friday, December 7. Other songs to debut this at the Singalong include “The FCC’s 12 Days of Christmas” and “Sell The Cubs” (set to the tune “Deck the Halls”).

The “media-and-politics-themed songs” are a follow up from September’s huge FCC hearing in Chicago. Today’s event will highlight the growing concern amongst Chicago residents regarding the Tribunes companies increasing concentration and power.

In addition to attacking the long standing cross-ownership waivers at the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Media Action is also adding its voice to a mounting wall of opposition to the FCC’s plan to relax cross-ownership rules nationwide. Their press release states, “For years, the Tribune has been advocating for the removal of FCC rules which would otherwise prevent the concentration of ownership, to the detriment of locally-responsive, locally-owned, more diverse media.”
