Cable competition bill passes Senate

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Senators signed off on legislation Tuesday intended to give TV viewers more choices than their current cable and satellite companies.

The bill would make it easier for telecommunications companies such as AT&T Inc. to begin offering television service to Missourians over their phone and Internet wires. Senators passed the bill 32-2, sending the measure to the House.

The Missouri Senate is considering one of the best-written pieces of legislation to come before it in some time: Senate Bill 284, the Missouri Video Franchise Bill. It should be a good bill, considering how much money AT&T spent to write it.

Almost a year after killing his own bill on the issue, state Sen. John Griesheimer has introduced legislation to allow for streamlined entry into the Show-Me State video services market. He authored a similar measure last year that appeared to be on the fast track for the governor's desk before it died in the spring.
