NAB Responds To LPFM Changes

WASHINGTON -- November 28, 2007: "NAB is pleased that the commission clarified that LPFM stations must indeed be locally owned with locally originated programming and limits ownership to one station per licensee," said NAB EVP Dennis Wharton in response to the FCC's changes to its low-power FM rules .

But Wharton echoed FCC Commissioners Deborah Taylor Tate and Robert McDowell's concerns about the rules change that would provide "enhanced stature" for LPFMs relative to full-power FMs by protecting some LPFMs when a full-power station's plans would potentially interfere with the low-power station.

And, about the commission's recommendation that Congress do away with third-adjacent channel protection for full-power FMs, Wharton said, "Though this is a recommendation identical to one made several years ago by the FCC, NAB continues to believe that statutory third-adjacent channel protections are critically important to protect listeners against interference."
