Timing on new cable till fuzzy
AT&T’s is licensed to provide cable TV in Albany, but there is no word on when — or if — service might start.

ALBANY — A new Georgia law allowed AT&T to purchase on Feb. 14 a single state video franchise that includes much of metro Albany, but the company is slow to say when it will bring U-verse television service to Southwest Georgia.

Secretary of State Handel Announces Implementation of Consumer Choice Television Act

Secretary of State Karen Handel today announced the implementation of the Consumer Choice Television Act (House Bill 227), which gives cable and/or video service providers the option to apply for a state-wide franchise license. The statute provides telecommunications companies a less restrictive process to offer cable and video services to Georgia counties and cities.

Perdue signs new laws, vetoes 41 bills

The Associated Press - ATLANTA

Gov. Sonny Perdue's veto pen got a workout on Wednesday.

Perdue vetoed 41 bills _ more than twice the number he rejected the year before. And the governor slashed more than $18 million in spending and bonds from the budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Georgia has just passed in both houses a bill which virtually eliminates local control of public rights of way. The telecom giants have been pushing this hard. One rep counted 47 lobbyists from ATT who had been pursuing her.

The Georgia Senate just voted 52-2 in favor of HB 227 the “Consumer Choice for Television Act.” The act becomes effective July 1, 2007.

Late last night HB 227 passed in the House and was sent to the Senate. Senator Schafer (404-656-0048) is the Chairman of the Regulated Utilities Committee. Please call Senator Schafer’s office and every Senator on the attached list. It is imperative that we let them know we are opposed to the state video franchise bill and it is not good for ALL Georgians because of the issues below:
